Research conducted by Susanne Pelger, senior lecturer at Lund University, reveals that scientists explaining their work to lay people helps them better understand, analyse and develop their research.
The study encouraged scientists to adapt their writing style to suit a more general audience. As a result, the participants found they were better able to understand different perspectives relating to their chosen topic, and also helped them to clarify the aims of their projects.
Science students who took part in the research also commented on how tailoring their thesis to a non-academic audience allowed them to discover new ideas and alternative approaches to their work.
Why writing medico-legal reports is important
Parallels can be drawn from this research to writing medico-legal reports. Reports are seen by many stakeholders during the claims process, including the lay client, the experienced lawyer, the defendant insurer, the opposing expert witness – if there is one – and ultimately the judge who decides the case. Each individual needs to understand the report’s contents.
David Stothard, managing director of MAPS Medical Reporting says: “We know in medico-legal reporting that it is important the expert communicates clearly to numerous different stakeholders.
“The benefit of working with MAPS Medical Reporting is access to a panel of experienced expert witnesses familiar with the requirements of reporting. Our panel is used to addressing a varied group of recipients – so they know how to explain complex ideas in different ways.
“A comprehensive medico-legal report can have a big impact on the proceedings of the claim. We facilitate the best report that allows solicitors to focus their skills and energy on winning the legal case and securing damages for their client.”
